IC Information
CHARACTER NAME: Takato Matsuda
AGE: 12 (13 post-series)
CANON: Digimon Tamers
CANON POINT: Post-Series
WORLD: Takato's world is mostly the same; he lives in the 'real world' of Earth with an adjoining Digital World that he can get into through Guilmon's home in the park, located in Shinjuku.
APPEARANCE:

PERSONALITY: Takato is a carefree, happy, cheerful and upbeat person who loves Digimon. He also loves to play the Digimon card game as well as drawing Digimon he’s made up. (One such Digimon became his partner; said Digimon was Guilmon.) He’s extremely imaginative and is creative, hence his love for drawing. Throughout the series, he had a crush on Juri Katou – which he openly admitted, though at the time it wasn’t to the real Juri. At first, Juri's actions showed that she teased him for enjoying Digimon but he was surprised when he finally revealed Guilmon to Juri and she didn't run screaming. (This may have been due to the fact that she saw MegaloGrowmon's first appearance along with Hikokazu and Kenta.) Initially, he didn't want Juri -or Hirokazu and Kenta- to get involved with the Digimon but relented when they helped out on occasion and finally received partners of their own. He tried to do his best to help Juri out when they went to the Digital World, but isn't successful due to the events involving Beelzebumon and Leomon's death. He blames himself at first for what happened to her but manages to get past it and rescue Juri from the D-Reaper in the final episodes after they discovered she had been captured and replaced before they left the Digital World.
He cares about all of his friends and their Digimon. Takato grew a bond out of trust and respect between himself and Jenrya Li -who he calls Jen- early in the series as shown in the episodes Digimon, Digimon Everywhere!(You're my Friend! Introducing Terriermon), 'To Fight or Not To Fight! (Renamon VS Guilmon! Battle is a Digimon's Life) and It Came from the Other Side (A Tamer's Trial! Defeat Gorillamon!) when he was still learning how to be a good Tamer. It was mainly thanks to Jenrya that Takato learned how to raise and train Guilmon well. Takato's relationship with Ruki was quite different, as Ruki had a difficult time letting anyone in. Takato first 'met' Ruki when he had a dream about her and Renamon facing a Lynxmon in battle in the series premiere though he would really meet her at the end of Digimon, Digimon Everywhere! when Renamon ambushed Guilmon and the two Digmon would fight twice in the following episode. Takato learned that Ruki's way of training Digimon was very different from Jenrya's and realized that he wanted to be friends with his partner. Eventually, throughout the early half of the series Ruki and Takato would come to see each other as friends even if she still kept him at arm's length as shown in No Mon is an Island (Showdown with Zhuqiaomon! SaintGalgomon, Ultimate Evolution) when she discovered in his 'letter' to their parents Takato put hearts at the end of her statement to her mother. From Ruki, Takato learned that you would have to fight other Digimon but only rarely did Guilmon ever absorb data.
Takato does care for Hirokazu and Kenta since they are his friends, but when he first tried to explain that Digimon were real and that he had a partner they shunned him for a time only to rekindle their friendship after seeing MegaloGrowmon. The next day, they got to meet Guilmon and have a little fun with him in a couple of episodes. Takato's friendship with Hirokazu is shown especially in the episode Out of the Blue (The last resort is This! Blue Card of Friendship) when he uses a self-made Blue Card Hirokazu made him to evolve Growmon to MegaloGrowmon to defeat Indramon. Like Hirokazu and Kenta, Takato does look up to Ryou Akiyama but it's not nearly shown as much except for the episode Goliath (Here is the Ghost Castle! The Great Escape of Stray Culumon) when the group -sans Ruki who had left in the previous episode- meet him for the first time. Except for a few phone calls in the early part of the series that left him frustrated, Takato doesn't really have much of a bond with Shuichon Li, Jenrya's sister, other than the fact that they're Tamers.
His understanding of the world is reminiscent of his age, though along with his sensitive nature this will cause him to worry about his actions as a Tamer; his inexperience shows as a result. He tries to be a good Tamer, however he’s never had real responsibility of this level before and when he doesn’t know what to do, he ends up crying. (This was shown more prominently in Not as Seen on TV (or 'Revert to Guilmon! The Growmon Incident' in Japan.) Takato’s shown to be perceptive as well, understanding the meaning behind certain concepts and events and ponders his choices and consequences before making a decision; when he repeats the choice, he’ll understand further consequences that could happen. He showed this character development when he explained that having a Digimon wasn’t a game. As he grew and matured as a Tamer, Takato didn’t just allow himself to sit back and let innocent people or Digimon be hurt. He’ll take charge of the situation and do his best with the skills he’s attained over the course of the series, and this showed during their adventures in the Real World, as well as their adventure in the Digital World. Despite this, he never once loses his sense of having fun.

Takato has a deep bond with Guilmon that is developed throughout the course of the series. It’s shown to the point where in Grow Mon Grow (Stand Up, Tamers! MegaloGrowmon Super Evolution!) when Growmon is mortally wounded, Takato feels the pain himself and has a dream where he admits that he doesn’t know if he’s worthy to be called a Tamer but he would do his best to help. Takato had to learn to be more confident in not just Guilmon, but in himself and his own abilities. He learned this lesson in full during the battle against the first Deva the Tamers faced in Mihiramon, and through the bond he shared with Guilmon, they were able to defeat the Tiger Deva. During the Tamers’ fight with Vikaralamon in the episodes The Boar Wars and A World Apart (Vikaralamon Appears! Proect Our Town!, and Digimon Total Sortie! Advancing while Facing the Wind), Takato stepped up and through his bond with MegaloGrowmon, he shared his own energy and strength with him. His bond was shaken in Shibumi Speaks (The Mystery of Guilmon's Birth! The Mystic Water Space), when he learned that the DigiGnomes were responsible for Takato’s wish of having a partner come true, but in learning that he discovered that Guilmon was data. The death of Leomon in episode 34 –named Lionheart in the English version, and The Kind-Hearted Hero, Leomon Dies! in the Japanese version- unhinged Takato’s mind and sense of rationality as well as filled him with blood lust. It may have happened during episodes 34-36, but Leomon dying showed that even Takato was struggling with negative feelings in his heart mostly because he found out that Guilmon was data. In his desire to see Beelzemon killed and erased, he forces MegaloGrowmon to Evolve to the Ultimate level. Unfortunately, his hatred corrupts the Evolution and causes MegaloGrowmon to become Megidramon. This chain reaction, along with Juri snapping him back to his senses, causes Takato’s Digivice to overload and shatter as he is horrified by Guilmon’s transformation. In the next episode, Takato realizes what he had done and what his partner truly means to him, regardless of the fact that Guilmon was data. He reaches the Guilmon inside Megidramon and causes him to revert back to normal. At this point, Takato wants to help Guilmon fight so badly that they merge together –known as Matrix Evolution, but called Biomerging in English- and become Guilmon’s true Ultimate form of Dukemon. (Takato receives a new Digivice, with the same red strap as before but gold-colored accents, following the battle.)
Takato’s imagination can oftentimes get the best of him, and he’ll let his feelings or imagination cloud his judgment. He tends to act goofy or childish, which was shown in early episodes of the series like Snakes, Trains and Digimon! (The Japanese version is Giant Snake Appearance! Oedo Line Great Panic), but is quite capable of donning a more adult attitude when circumstances become serious. When aware of other people’s problems, Takato tries his best to help them out and is capable of placing himself in their situation; examples are shown when he has difficulty in telling his parents, especially his Mom, about his perceived duty to Guilmon and finding Calumon in 'The Journey Begins' (To the Digital World...The Day of Departure), as well as sending a message on behalf of all the Tamers to their parents, despite him and Jenrya being separated from the group at the time. By the end of the series, Takato’s perception of good and evil has evolved to the point of no longer considering their opponents the ‘bad guys’. He’ll judge them by their actions instead, and won’t hesitate in battle, if he feels the situation is warranted and that there’s no other choice to take, to kill said opponent when the opportunity presents itself. He’ll make certain to search for any possible alternatives beforehand, and is always open to others’ views on the current problem/situation at hand.
HISTORY: Here and Here!
SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON: Here!
THIRD PERSON: ...This REALLY isn't my day! When I planned to spend the day with Guilmon I should've realized that might mean I'd have to stop a runaway train from wrecking serious havoc downtown! But why did he Realize here anyway?
This wasn't the first time Takato had to chase down a runaway Locomon, and he was pretty sure it wouldn't be the last! Still, at least Evolution wasn't possible since Parasimon wasn't controlling him, and once spotting the Perfect level Digimon Growmon was hot on it's trail! He was surprised when he found out they were first at the station before any of the others, but he made sure to let them know he would hold Locomon off until they could get to them.
"Growmon! We've gotta slow Locomon down before someone gets hurt!" Yeah, that's easier said than done; Locomon's a Perfect level, and Growmon's only an Adult! There's only so much he can do on his own.
"But Growmon's getting tired and Locomon isn't stopping, Takato...!" The Adult Digimon insisted, Takato's partner having missed the chance to get in front of the Train Digimon when he first evolved. And from what the goggle-wearing Tamer could see, Growmon was definitely slowing down. His face narrowed with determination, not content to just give up and let Locomon have it's way in the Real World!
We've got to catch up with that Digimon and get him back to the Digital World somehow...! Takato thought while silently vowing that he would give it his all along with Guilmon while at that precise moment, the card he was holding onto became blue, proof that he trusted his partner implicitly and that Guilmon in turn trusted him in the same way. The others aren't here yet, but we'll do what we can to distract Locomon until they catch up! I trust Guilmon, and we've stopped much stronger and tougher Digimon than this one! Together...anything's possible! The moment he glanced down at the card, he smiled broadly once seeing it had changed before motioning for Growmon to stop.
"Hang on, boy...! We're gonna stop this train in it's tracks!" Takato quickly got into his pose and holding up his D-Arc before slashing the Blue card.
"CARD SLASH! MATRIX EVOLUTION!"
GROWMON EVOLVES TO...MEGALOGROWMON!!!
Immediately, the Perfect Digimon took to the skies and flew past Locomon before pulling a 180 and turning around, putting his arms out and actually pushing the Train Digimon back! "Stop right there...MegaloGrowmon won't let you pass...!"
"I must run...I'm gonna keep on running!"
"Not if we have anything to say about it...!" came MegaloGrowmon's reply before a quick roar of "DOUBLE BLADES!!!" showed that the Android Digimon's attack slowed Locomon down even further, the wheels spinning but not getting any traction.
Alright! We've slowed him down enough that he can't go any farther... Takato felt a smile cross his face before hearing his cell phone go off, hearing the tone of Ruki's annoyed voice on the other end as he reassured his friend that they were holding Locomon at bay until they could arrive and help out.
...and with any luck, Ruki and the others will get here soon and we can figure out how to send Locomon back to the Digital World safely!
OTHER: Okay - I can play tandem with the Guilmon who's already in game!
